This is a delightful tale of a young magpie that tried to be everything except a bird, and the friends she made on her way through the forest. But it takes a friend in need to make her realise she is a bird after all. I’m sure children will enjoy this little story with its flavour of Australian bush creatures
Moira Horrocks, children’s book editor
This is a delightful tale about coming to terms with accepting oneself for who we are and being happy about it despite wondering what it would be like to be different. Marlo learns to accept herself after experimenting - through trial and error – being ‘other animals’ and realising, after helping someone very special, that she too, is special and unique in her own way.

Marlo the magpie is a square peg in a round hole and she WANTS it that way. Why should she fly when there are so many other ways to get about? Marlo has a go... but finally she understands where her talent lies. She can be wonderful and unique just by being herself. What stands out for me in this picture book text is Marlo herself. She’s gutsy, grumpy... and ultimately glorious!
