Today, I was invited back to a school to talk to the kids about writing. I enjoy school visits because it connects kids to books and gives them an appreciation of the process involved in creating the books they love. It’s a much more powerful way than simply reading them.
I also conducted a basic writing workshop involving story construction, sequencing and narrative writing. My aim was to get the students to think creatively and also to make them laugh. By the end of the workshop, the students were energised and inspired with a new appreciation for reading and writing. Also, students were asked by their teacher to talk about and share what they had learnt. I was overwhelmed by their responses that I, too, found myself energised, enthused and inspired. The feedback I received was wonderful – one student thanked me for inspiring her. For me visiting schools has been the most rewarding thing I’ve done. Not only do I create fans for my books, but it’s great to see how I can make a difference in a child’s life.
